There are many beetroot juice products marketed to athletes, although not all beet juice products are created equal. The dietary nitrate content of beetroot varies substantially, so it is difficult to know exactly how much nitrate any product contains and therefore if the amount is sufficient to enhance exercise performance. Most beetroot juice products contain little-to-no dietary nitrate, thus offer minimal, if any performance benefit. Beet It Sport products provide a controlled dose of dietary nitrate, so you know exactly how much nitrate you are getting for your money.
Over the last decade, our beetroot juice has been used in over 300 independent studies around the world, for research into the benefits of dietary nitrate supplementation for sport and exercise performance. Beet It Sport is Informed Sport certified and is the natural nitrate product most trusted by the worlds sporting elite; most notably, by Eliud Kipchoge of the prodigious NN Running Team. We believe our products are the best – researched by the best, used by the best; that’s who we are – James White: Bold By Nature.
Beet It Sport products contain no preservatives or additives due to their 100% natural ingredients. All Beet It Sport products can be stored ambient or chilled. Our Nitrate 400 shots should be consumed within the same day of opening; our Nitrate 3000 concentrate should be kept refrigerated and consumed within 21 days of opening. Our Nitrate 8000 crystals should be kept tightly sealed and consumed within 45 days once opened.
Consume 1 or 2 shots one to three hours before training and for up to six days before competition. You can follow the above dosing guidelines with the equivalent dose of dietary nitrate from 1-2 servings (33-66ml) of Nitrate 3000 super concentrate or 2-3 scoops of Nitrate 8000 crystals.
After consuming nitrate-rich beetroot juice, nitrate is absorbed into the blood stream and taken up by the salivary glands, before being converted to nitrite by bacteria in the mouth. Nitrite is then swallowed, absorbed into the blood stream, and transported around the body. Nitrite can be converted to nitric oxide in the blood and in various organs including muscle. Nitric oxide is important for several processes that influence exercise performance, including vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and muscle contractility (increase in the force of contraction). A key effect of dietary nitrate is that it reduces the oxygen demand of exercise, meaning the muscles need less oxygen to maintain a given work rate, thereby improving exercise efficiency, fatigue resistance and exercise performance. Beet It Organic shots contain at least 300mg of nitrate and Beet It Sport shots contain at least 400mg of nitrate – both are the same size (70ml) and are made from the same ingredients; 98% concentrated beetroot juice, 2% lemon juice from concentrate, yet Beet It Organic shots are made from organic beetroot. Most anti-cavity fluoride-containing mouth rinses have no effect on the conversion of nitrate, however there is evidence to show that some antibacterial mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine might disrupt the conversion of nitrate to nitrite in the mouth. You should consider avoiding these if you are using Beet It Sport to improve performance.
After consuming beetroot juice, the levels of nitrate and nitrite in the blood stream peak after 1-3 hours and remain elevated for around six hours, before returning to baseline after 12-24 hours. Find out more on our science page.
Beetroot is particularly high in nitrate, however, on average you would need to consume ~500ml of beetroot juice for an adequate dose of dietary nitrate (~400mg) – this is a lot of beetroot juice to consume before exercise. As such, we developed the concentrated beetroot juice shot to control the dose of nitrate in a more convenient 70ml format.
According to the International Olympic Committee, between 310-560mg of dietary nitrate is required for benefits to performance. As we have mentioned above, not all beetroot juices are created equal, so you need to check the nitrate content of the beetroot juice per serving, to ensure you are consuming enough nitrate. All Beet It Sport products provide at least 400mg of dietary nitrate per serving. Find out more on our science page.
Beet It Sport products either contain 100% concentrated beetroot juice (Nitrate 3000 and Nitrate 8000) or 98% concentrated beetroot juice with 2% lemon juice (Nitrate 400). Beeturia (pink urine and stools) is a harmless side effect which dissipates within 12 hours of consumption.
As with any prescribed medication it is always important to check with your doctor before changing your diet. As Beet It is a natural product, we suggest you treat is as any other vegetable juice – drinking in moderation, however we would always advise contacting your doctor if you are worried in any way.
No; dietary nitrate from beetroot juice has been shown to promote greater exercise benefits than synthetic forms of nitrate (potassium and sodium nitrate), possibly due to several other compounds in beetroot juice that have antioxidant properties (polyphenols and betacyanins) and which may increase the capacity for nitric oxide synthesis compared to synthetic / chemical forms of nitrate.

A key effect of dietary nitrate from beetroot juice is that it reduces the oxygen demand of exercise, which means the working muscles need less oxygen to maintain a given running pace, thereby improving exercise efficiency, fatigue resistance and exercise performance. Yes, the benefits of dietary nitrate supplementation are applicable to many sports and exercise types. For example, has been shown to improve high-intensity, intermittent team-sport exercise performance and attenuate the decline in cognitive function associated with fatigue – for example reaction time and decision making. Studies have also shown that dietary nitrate supplementation via beetroot juice can influence muscle contractile properties and increase human muscle speed and power production.
